With dynamic speakers, unique programming, expert panel discussions and workshops, and a vibrant exhibit hall, SupplySide West is the go-to event for natural products professionals. The creative collaborations and innovative ingredients that are a hallmark of the event are also the driving force behind the thriving marketplace. Now in its 7th year, the SupplySide CPG Editor's Choice Awards recognizes some of the coolest new launches of consumer packaged goods (CPG) products in nearly 30 categories.

A 2017 survey of U.S. consumers revealed 83 percent of respondents wanted to add more plant-based foods to their diets in order to improve their health and nutrition, according to Statista. Additional responses included eating plant-based for weight management (62 percent), the desire to eat “cleaner” (51 percent), health concerns or diagnosis (24 percent), to save money (17 percent) and environmental concerns (14 percent).

A forecast report from Baum + Whiteman predicted plant-based as the top food trend of 2018. The international food and restaurant consultancy noted most dining trends are driven by restaurants; however, it credited innovation in consumer packaged goods (CPGs) for leading the movement in plant-based.

Among the selling points of this year’s plant-based ECA finalists are:

  • meat-free protein that offers a meat-like experience,
  • foods that embrace the colors and nutritional benefits of plants,
  • cleaner labels that appeal to discerning consumers, and
  • better-for-you options that are easy to prepare or ready to serve.

One winner in each category will be announced on the SupplySide Central Stage at SupplySide West 2018, held at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. The supplement winners will be revealed Thursday, Nov. 8, from 1:30 to 2 p.m., followed by the food and beverage winners on Friday, Nov. 9, from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Click the following link to learn more about the networking event or to register for SupplySide West.

Added sugars are one of the latest villains in the burgeoning better-for-you product quest, particularly when it comes to beverages. Soda and sports drinks were targeted years ago, but more subtle sources—such as juice, tea and flavored water—were less scrutinized until recent years, as consumers got more savvy and clean label excelled. Various government entities have attempted or enacted levying taxes on sugary beverages, with mixed results. However, advances in alternative sweeteners have yielded many positive gains.

Takeaways for your business

• Added sugars contribute almost 270 calories per day to American diets
• Chile, Mexico and the UK enacted taxes on sugary drinks; U.S. efforts have been in smaller regions.
• Sweeteners such as stevia, coconut sugar, organic raw agave, honey and monk fruit appeal to a clean label.

According to the National Restaurant Association's 2016 Restaurant Industry Forecast, nearly three-fourths of all adults wish restaurants would serve breakfast items throughout the day. With fast-food giants like Taco Bell and Subway adding morning meal hours and items at some locations, and McDonald’s offering its breakfast menu the full day, eateries are taking notice of consumers’ round-the-clock affinity for breakfast foods. CPG companies in the niche are also reaping the benefits.

The NPD Group noted quickservice accounts for nearly 80 percent of total restaurant morning meals, which supports the grab-n-go trend our editors continue to see (and enjoy) in the breakfast foods category. Quick and tasty, this year’s finalists boast a range of unique characteristics, from Certified Transitional grain cereal and fortified ancient grain oatmeal to a paleo frozen toaster waffle.

Despite competition from a crowded field, U.S. sales of salty snacks are expected to exceed $29 billion in 2022, according to Packaged Facts. Growth is expected to come from products that are as flavorful as possible but also as healthy and nutritious as possible to satisfy the growing demand among consumers who want to indulge without the guilt. Brands are introducing new snacks featuring new flavor combinations and better-for-you ingredients such as proteins, grains, vegetables and superfoods.

The Sports Food and Beverage category saw lots of ready-to-prepare powder beverage mix entries, reflecting the market’s love of convenience and customization. In active consumer markets it’s rare to talk food and not mention dieting. By far the most represented diet trend in this year’s contest was the ketogenic or keto diet, which involves very low carbohydrate intake to trigger the body’s use of fat and ketones for energy. Keto dietary products often include medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which help drive production of ketones and energy.

Despite the growth of sports- and protein-focused functional foods, from cookies to soups, bars are still a top edible in this category, which saw a low-carb/high-protein bar made from nuts, seeds and whey stand out among the food nominees.

Low-pH is in, represented by the innovative vinegars category—from sipping vinegar to apple cider vinegar to switchel. These are among the five finalists vying for the 2018 CPG Editor's Choice Award in organic beverages.

Now in its 7th year, the SupplySide CPG Editor's Choice Awards recognizes what's cool in innovation in dozens of categories. Beverages are undergoing a sea change as consumers flee from old-standby colas and carbonated sugar water to seek out new experiences. Cold boxes in stores don't look anything like they did at the turn of the century. That's exciting.

One winner in each of nearly 30 categories will be announced on the SupplySide Central Stage at SupplySide West 2018, held at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. The supplement winners will be revealed Thursday, Nov. 8, from 1:30 to 2 p.m., followed by the food and beverage winners on Friday, Nov. 9, from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Click the following link to learn more about the networking event or to register for SupplySide West

Once an option only sought out by a small minority of consumers (typically those dealing with a verified sensitivity), foods and beverages free-from allergens and/or gluten have become much more popular. An increasing number of consumers are purchasing from these categories in the interest of making “better for you” choices. And that’s on top of those who need to shop with an eye on food sensitivities and allergies.

Hats off to this year’s top five contenders in the Allergy-Free/Gluten-Free category. They confirm that omitting certain ingredients no longer suggests a product won’t be as flavorful or convey the same texture or experience as a product containing gluten or an allergen.

One winner in each category will be announced on the SupplySide Central Stage at SupplySide West 2018, held at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
